HAPPY CHANCE 49M PIPER DUTCH BARGE
Tingdene Thames & Kennet Marina, Henley Rd, Reading, RG4 9RA

£240,000
Happy Chance brings a smile to everyone’s face when they see her – and when they’re on her.
Built by Piper Boats Ltd in the UK and launched in May 2015, she spent her first 5 years on the Thames and was enjoyed as a ‘floating cottage” for long weekends in Henley, Marlow, Sonning, Pangbourne, Goring, Abingdon, Hampton Court, etc.
In September 2020, she was transported by lorry to Europe during Covid for a change of scene and was moored in Bruges during the winter and Nieuwpoort during the summer. She was then transported back to the UK by lorry in February 2023, and after a major upgrade at Pipers (repainted tops sides, 8 new solar panels, new interior upholstery and other technical updates), she returned to the Thames in May 2023.
With oak veneer flooring, large portholes (18 inches) and neutral soft furnishings throughout – including built-in sofas, dinette seating, blinds and worktops – Happy Chance is a bright, airy and light-filled boat with plenty of storage space.
Certified to a Category C, she is fitted with all the necessary for use on rivers and European waterways with AIS Class B, Raymarine plotter and VHF Radio. At 14.9m she is an ideal size to be accepted at most marinas. Her size is also a benefit when negotiating tight spaces and low bridges on the UK and European waterways.

Overview
Happy Chance is fully insulated, double glazed and heated throughout. The central heating and hot water is provided by engine, immersion heater or the Kabola Oil Fired Boiler, which heats radiators in the wheelhouse, saloon, master cabin (including the heated towel rail in the ensuite shower room) and the convertible cabin. The system can be operated manually or via the Hive app. Should the WiFi disconnect, there is the option turn on the heating remotely using a text message.
Happy Chance also benefits from having 800 watts of solar power. This is provided by 8 Flexi panels and controlled by a Victron energy Smart Solar charge controller with Bluetooth connectivity. The 2x Lithium Fogstardrift hotel batteries can also be monitored via a Bluetooth app.
Master cabin with ensuite shower room
The master cabin is a very comfortable space with a king-sized island bed, laminated wood floor and ample storage. There are built-in units with shelves and drawers and a full double wardrobe, plus further storage in drawers under the mattress. There are reading lights to each side of bed and a small vanity unit with a mirror. The master cabin also has the luxury of being air conditioned, operated via a small control panel.
The large, ensuite shower room features a walk-in shower and a heated towel rail. There’s a wash basin with a mixer tap and storage, and the toilet is Jabsco with an electric flush/macerator system.
The convertible cabin/dinette
Happy Chance was the first Piper barge to have a convertible cabin/dinette for maximum use of space and flexibility. It has a sliding door opposite the guest toilet and a sliding ‘wall’ that overlooks the saloon. The dinette can be used as an office, somewhere to do arts & crafts, sew, make jigsaws, have a bite to eat while watching TV, etc. When the doors are closed and the ‘wall’ is lifted, it becomes a private bedroom for guests, with a bedside table, storage space for suitcases under the bed and a small cupboard with drawers for clothes.
Guest toilet
There is a Jabsco toilet with an electric flush/macerator system and a small hand basin with mixer tap.
Saloon/Galley
The saloon is cosy and comfortable whatever the weather. The built-in sofa has drawers and a side table to maximise storage – and a radiator hidden behind it to maximise space. There’s a TV unit with a Samsung HD TV connected to a Caro Satellite dish (auto search), plus a separate side cupboard for additional storage. There’s also a large underfloor storage area for even more storage. The Dog box provides plenty of light and has two external covers, one for winter and one for summer. Internally it has a fly screen and black out blind. The laundry space is also located in this area with a washer/dryer within a cupboard that has shelves for food storage and a space for brooms. Opposite the cupboard there’s a built-in full-length mirror.
The galley is fitted with everything you need for day-to-day living, including a fridge/freezer with a storage drawer underneath, a 4-burner gas oven and grill, a slimline dishwasher, a sink with Brita filter mixer tap and storage, and additional storage built into the sides of the galley worktop.
The Wheelhouse/convertible dinette
Steps lead up from the saloon to the wheelhouse, a wonderful area to relax and enjoy the views, especially on warm sunny days. As the floor in the wheelhouse and on the back deck is made of the same flexi-teak, when you open the French Door doors you get that indoor-outdoor, continuous space feeling.
The dinette table with built-in seating is the perfect spot to enjoy a meal with friends. And like the dinette table in the convertible cabin, it also converts into a double bed.
All the windows in the wheelhouse have pull-down blinds, except for the large windscreen blind which is operated electronically for ease of use.
In addition to an overhead hatch, the split windscreen also has an opening centre window for ventilation. There is a storage drawer under the port side bench and access to the engine room under the starboard side bench. A deep lazarette on the back deck provides even more storage for bulkier items such as BBQ’s, ropes, hoses, buckets, pressure washers etc.
Engine Room
Steps lead down into the engine room from the wheelhouse where you will find the Mastervolt electrical system, the battery bank, the Keel cooled engine cooling system, 5kw diesel generator, Hot water tank, Kabola boiler and 75 Litre IsoTemp Hot Water Tank, Stern Thruster, Weed Hatch inspection point, storage for tools and equipment, and central to the space is the Beta Marine 105hp ( 800 hours ) turbo charged engine coupled to a PRM hydraulic gearbox.
Cruising and Navigation Equipment
Located on the dashboard area in the wheelhouse are all the controls needed for when on the move. There is a selection of switches that control the navigation lights, horn, windscreen wiper, steaming light, anchor light and deck lights. There are numerous gauges that provides information regarding RPM, oil pressure, battery voltage and temperature, Rudder angle and water depth. The Raymarine VHF DSC radio is installed here along with Raymarine Chart Plotter and AIS class B. The Joysticks for the Bow and Stern Thrusters are also located here.
